What is this, in plain English?

Custom Instructions are a sticky note you leave for ChatGPT: who you are and how you like answers. You write it once in Settings, and ChatGPT uses it in every chat so you stop repeating “keep it short” or “I’m a beginner.”

📝 Custom Instructions
Standing note about you and how to reply. Applies to normal chats.
🧑‍🍳 Custom GPT
A separate helper with its own job. See our first Custom GPT guide.
🧠 Memory
ChatGPT remembering useful details over time when Memory is on. Different feature — see Memory for beginners.

Step by step (web & desktop)

  1. Open chatgpt.com and sign in.
  2. Open Settings, then choose Personalization.
  3. Turn Enable customization ON.
  4. Type what you want ChatGPT to know in the Custom Instructions field.
  5. Start any chat — your note is already in force. Updates apply immediately, including to existing chats.

Step by step (iPhone & Android)

  1. Open the ChatGPT app and go to Settings.
  2. Choose Customize ChatGPT.
  3. Turn Enable customization ON.
  4. Enter your instructions in the Custom Instructions field.

Copy-paste starter: busy parent / small shop

I’m a busy non-technical person. Keep answers under 150 words unless I ask for detail. Use short bullet lists and plain words — no jargon. Ask one clarifying question if something important is missing. Never invent prices, stats, or quotes. End with one tiny next step I can do in under 2 minutes.

More fun instruction ideas

  • 📚 Homework coach: give hints and questions, never the full answer on the first try.
  • ✉️ Kind email rewriter: make drafts polite, clear, and under 120 words.
  • 🛒 Shop helper: ask about budget and use-case before recommending anything.
  • 🗓️ Day planner: push for top 3 priorities and one break.
  • 🎉 Party planner: always include a shopping list and a timeline.

Custom Instructions set your usual style. For a single request, the 4-part prompt formula gets better answers on the first try.

Don’t put secrets here: passwords, ID numbers, bank details, or private health info. Instructions can shape replies across chats, and OpenAI’s help notes that plugin use may share relevant instruction info with plugins you enable.

How to turn them off

Web/desktop: Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions → turn Enable customization OFF (optionally clear the text). Phone: Settings → Customize ChatGPT → turn Enable customization OFF.

Custom Instructions vs Memory: Instructions are the style sheet you write. Memory (when available) can remember details from chats over time. Full walkthrough: ChatGPT Memory for beginners. Manage it under Settings → Personalization → Memory. Temporary chats: OpenAI’s Temporary Chat help page says that when you start one, you choose Personalized (can use your existing memories, custom instructions and plugins) or Unpersonalized (uses none of them) before your first message, and you can’t change it once the chat starts. Neither option creates or updates memories, and if a temporary chat turns out useful you can save it as a regular chat (OpenAI added these controls on Aug 27, 2026).

See what shaped an answer: the Sources icon

Wondering whether ChatGPT actually used your instructions? OpenAI’s release notes (May 5, 2026) say you can tap the Sources icon below a response to see the saved memories, past chats and custom instructions that helped personalize it, then correct, delete or mark something as not relevant. OpenAI says it rolled out on the web first with mobile coming later, it may not show every factor behind a reply, and the sources aren’t shown if you share the chat. (Your custom instructions aren’t shown to people viewing a shared link either.)

Custom GPT or Project ignoring your style? That’s expected. OpenAI’s GPTs help page says GPTs don’t use your saved memory, custom instructions or previous conversations; each GPT chat starts fresh with the GPT’s own instructions. Inside a Project, OpenAI says project instructions apply only within that project and override your custom instructions, so copy your key style line into the Project’s instructions (••• > Project settings). Heads-up: OpenAI also says it plans to retire custom GPTs (standard retirement is scheduled for Dec 11, 2026) and moving their workflows to plugins.

Custom Instructions follow you to the desktop app when you sign in with the same account. After you install the ChatGPT desktop app for beginners, your style rules still apply in Chat (OpenAI’s Projects page notes project instructions can override them inside a Project).

Quick FAQ

What are ChatGPT Custom Instructions?

A settings note ChatGPT applies to every chat so you don’t have to repeat your preferences each time.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan for Custom Instructions?

No. OpenAI says Custom Instructions are available on all plans on Web, Desktop, iOS, and Android. Free and Go users can save up to 1,500 characters; Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education users can save up to 5,000.

What’s the difference between Custom Instructions and Memory?

Custom Instructions are guidance you write about yourself and how you want replies. Memory can remember useful details across chats when it is enabled. They are separate features.

Do custom GPTs use my Custom Instructions?

No. OpenAI’s help center says GPTs don’t use your saved memory, custom instructions or previous conversations; each conversation starts fresh with the GPT’s own instructions. In a ChatGPT Project, the project’s instructions override your custom instructions, so add your style there too.

Do temporary chats use my Custom Instructions?

Only if you pick Personalized. OpenAI says when you start a temporary chat you choose Personalized (can use your existing memories, custom instructions and plugins) or Unpersonalized (uses none of them) before the first message. Neither creates or updates memories, and you can save a temporary chat as a regular chat.
