Small Business Saturday 2026 is Saturday, November 28, two days after Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26). The SBA calls it “an important part of small businesses’ busiest shopping season” and invites everyone to #ShopSmall that day. American Express founded the day in 2010, and the SBA has officially cosponsored it since 2011.
The free stuff is real, and you don’t have to be an Amex merchant for most of it. On its Shop Small Resource Hub, American Express says:
- Free downloadable marketing materials (ready-to-use social posts and printable posters) are available even if you don’t accept American Express Cards and aren’t a Card Member. Business owners only pay for printing what they download.
- The Shop Small® Studio has holiday-themed and year-round materials in English and Spanish, and you can make custom materials “in less than two minutes.”
- Free Shop Small signs and supplies can be ordered, and qualifying American Express Card-accepting small businesses can appear on the Shop Small® Map and be recommended to Card Members for free. Amex lists its 2026 eligibility rules (for example, located in the U.S. or a U.S. territory and up to 25 locations; online merchants can be eligible) and says it can’t guarantee a business will appear on the map.
What ChatGPT is good for here: turning “we should do something for Small Business Saturday” into one clear plan, then writing the posts, the sign, the email and the thank-you note in your voice, fast. What it’s not for: deciding your prices, promising results, or writing anything that pretends to be a customer.

Step 1: Pick one simple, honest plan
- Pick one reason to come in (not five): a small gift with purchase, a free gift-wrap station, a holiday sampler, a kids’ coloring table, a “make-and-take” mini class, a local-maker pop-up, extended hours, or a real discount on a few items.
- If you advertise a discount, use your real price. “Was $40, now $30” is only honest if $40 is a price you actually charged in the regular course of business for a reasonably substantial time (FTC Guides Against Deceptive Pricing). If you just say “Sale,” the cut shouldn’t be so tiny it’s meaningless.
- Write down the facts once: date (Saturday, Nov. 28), your hours, address, what’s on offer, any limits (“while supplies last,” “one per customer”), and whether you also sell online.
- Grab the free materials from the Amex Shop Small Resource Hub (posters and social posts), and order free signs early.
- Plan your week: posts starting about two weeks out, a reminder the day before, the day itself, and a thank-you after.
3 copy-paste prompts to try today
1. 🗓️ “Plan my Small Business Saturday on one page”
Paste this into a new (Temporary) chat. Fill in the brackets with general facts about your business; no customer names or numbers.
I run a small [TYPE OF BUSINESS] in [TOWN, STATE]. Small Business Saturday is Saturday, November 28, 2026. About us: [WHAT WE SELL], usual customers: [WHO], hours that day: [HOURS], budget for extras: [$ AMOUNT OR "ALMOST NOTHING"]. Help me make a one-page plan: 1) Suggest 5 simple ideas that fit a tiny budget. Mark which take under 1 hour. 2) After I pick one, make a day-by-day checklist from today to Nov 28, plus a thank-you step on Nov 29-30. 3) List anything I must decide myself (prices, limits, hours). Don't invent prices, discounts or sales numbers. Plain words, short lines.
Then try: “Turn that into a printable checklist with boxes,” or “What could go wrong on the day, and what’s a simple backup for each?”
2. 📣 “Write my posts and my door sign in my voice”
Paste 2 or 3 of your past posts (your words only, no customer names) so it learns how you sound:
Here are 3 posts I wrote, so you can match my voice: [PASTE] Write for Small Business Saturday, Saturday Nov 28, 2026, at [BUSINESS NAME]: 1) 4 short social posts: 2 weeks out, 1 week out, the day before, the morning of. Use #ShopSmall and #SmallBusinessSaturday. 2) A door/counter sign: big headline, 3 short lines, our hours. 3) A 2-sentence version for Google. Our offer: [EXACT OFFER AND LIMITS]. Use ONLY the facts I gave you. No "best in town," no made-up reviews, no fake "was" prices, no countdown pressure. Warm, local, human.
Check every date, price and hour before you post. Want a matching graphic? See Make a flyer or post graphic, or use the free Shop Small templates.
3. ✉️ “Email my customers (the honest, legal way)”
Only email people who gave you their address. Write the email in ChatGPT, but keep the customer list in your email program:
Write a short marketing email for [BUSINESS NAME] about Small Business Saturday, Saturday Nov 28, 2026. Offer: [EXACT OFFER]. Hours: [HOURS]. Rules: - Subject line must honestly match the email (no "RE:", no fake urgency). - Say clearly near the top that it's a promotion. - End with our postal address: [ADDRESS or "PO BOX"] and a line: "Don't want these emails? Reply STOP or use the unsubscribe link and we'll remove you." - Under 120 words. Friendly, not pushy. Give me 3 subject lines to choose from.
Those rules come from the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide for business: honest “From” and subject lines, identify the message as an ad, include your valid physical postal address, give a clear way to opt out, and honor opt-outs within 10 business days. It applies to all commercial email, not just bulk email.

- Set special hours on Google. Google Business Profile Help says special hours let you change hours for holidays and special events without changing your regular hours. Go to your Business Profile, select Edit profile → Hours, then next to Special hours select Edit, pick the date, enter your hours (or check Closed), and select Save. Google suggests confirming hours for official holidays (like Thanksgiving) even if they’re the same as usual. Special hours only show if your profile is set to “Open with main hours.”
- Download the free Shop Small materials (posters, social posts, English and Spanish) from American Express’s Shop Small Resource Hub, and order the free signs early.
- If you accept American Express, check whether you qualify for the Shop Small Map (Amex lists the 2026 rules on the hub page). Shoppers find participating businesses through the SBA’s and Amex’s Small Business Saturday pages.
- Post the same facts everywhere: your door, your social pages, your Google profile and your email should all say the same date, hours and offer.
Step 3: Keep it honest (the rules that trip up small shops)
- Reviews: the FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials rule (16 CFR Part 465) makes it illegal for a business to write or sell fake reviews, to buy reviews (money, discounts, gifts or contest entries count) that must be positive or negative, and for owners or managers to post reviews of their own business without clearly saying who they are. Asking all your customers to share an honest review is fine.
- “Was” prices and “sale”: a former price must be the real price you openly offered for a reasonably substantial time, not one you raised just to “cut” it (16 CFR Part 233). A “sale” shouldn’t be a meaningless few cents off.
- Email: follow the CAN-SPAM basics in prompt 3 (honest subject, identify it as an ad, postal address, easy opt-out, honor opt-outs within 10 business days).
- Texts: a good habit is to text only customers who agreed to get texts from you, and always include a way to opt out.
- Trademarks: “Small Business Saturday” and “Shop Small” are American Express trademarks. Using Amex’s own free materials is the easy way to stay on brand.
Keep your customers’ info private
- Don’t paste customer email lists, phone numbers, addresses, order histories or card numbers into ChatGPT. Write the message in ChatGPT; send it from your email or text program.
- Use a Temporary chat for anything about your business numbers you’d rather not keep in your history.
- Real photos, real people: only post photos of customers or staff who said yes.
Troubleshooting
- “ChatGPT made up a discount or a review.” Delete it and remind it: “Use only the facts I gave you. Don’t invent prices, reviews or numbers.”
- “The posts all sound like a robot.” Paste 3 of your own posts and say “match this voice; shorter; no exclamation points.”
- “I don’t take American Express. Can I still join in?” Yes. Anyone can shop small that day, and Amex says you don’t need to accept its cards to download the free marketing materials.
- “I sell online only.” Amex says online merchants can be eligible for its program, and prompt 13 (members) writes your “we’re also online” post.
- “My Google hours didn’t change.” Check that the profile is set to “Open with main hours,” then re-check Special hours for Nov 26 and Nov 28.
- “ChatGPT says something different from the SBA, Amex or FTC page.” The official page wins. Ask ChatGPT, “Where did that come from?” and check.
