Quick answer: Tell your assistant who you’re feeding, what you like and hate, any allergies, and how much time you have, then ask for 5 dinners plus one grocery list sorted by store section. Paste the prompts below, fill in the [BRACKETS], and double-check anything allergy-related yourself.

Why this is the perfect first “bot job”

Meal planning is the classic beginner win: it happens every week, it’s mildly annoying, and you can instantly tell if the answer is good. If the plan includes mushrooms and your kid hates mushrooms, you’ll know. That makes it a great way to learn how to talk to an AI assistant.

Works anywhere: these are plain-language prompts, so they work in ChatGPT, Claude or Grok Bot, on your phone or computer. Phone-ok from start to finish.

Step 1: Give it your “family card” (once)

Copy this, fill it in, and paste it at the start of your chat:

I want help planning dinners. Here's my household:
- Who's eating: [e.g. 2 adults, 2 kids ages 6 and 9]
- Loves: [e.g. tacos, pasta, anything with chicken]
- Won't eat: [e.g. mushrooms, very spicy food]
- Allergies or diet needs: [e.g. none / peanut allergy / vegetarian]
- Time on weeknights: [e.g. 30 minutes max]
- Kitchen gear: [e.g. oven, stovetop, slow cooker, air fryer]
- Budget feel: [e.g. keep it cheap / normal / treat night Friday]
Ask me up to 3 questions if anything important is missing.

That last line is a secret weapon: it lets the assistant ask before it guesses.

Step 2: Get the week

Plan 5 weeknight dinners for my household above.
Reuse ingredients across meals so less food goes to waste.
For each dinner give: name, about how long it takes, and a 1-line description.
Don't include anything on my "won't eat" or allergy list.
Then ask me which ones to swap before you write recipes.

Don’t like one? Just say “swap Wednesday for something with ground beef.” You’re the boss.

Step 3: The grocery list (the magic part)

Make one combined grocery list for the 5 dinners we picked.
Group it by store section (produce, meat, dairy, pantry, frozen).
Combine duplicates and give rough amounts.
Mark items I probably already have (salt, oil, basic spices) under
"Check your pantry" instead of the main list.
Phone trick: copy the list into your phone’s Notes or Reminders app and check things off as you shop.

Step 4: Simple recipes, only when you need them

Give me the recipe for [DINNER NAME] for [NUMBER] people.
Short numbered steps, plain words, and tell me what to start first
so everything is ready at the same time.

4 bonus prompts that make it fun

🥡 “Use up my fridge”

Here's what's in my fridge and pantry: [LIST].
Suggest 3 dinners I can make mostly from this, and tell me the
1–2 extra things I'd need to buy for each.
Lazy version: skip the typing and snap a photo of your open fridge instead. Here’s how to upload a photo to ChatGPT.

💸 “Tight week”

Plan 5 budget-friendly dinners for my household using cheap staples
like beans, rice, eggs, pasta and frozen veggies. Keep the grocery list short.

🍱 “Lunches too”

Using leftovers from this week's dinners, plan 3 easy packed lunches.
No extra cooking if possible.

🧒 “Kid helper night”

Pick one dinner from this week that a [AGE]-year-old could help make.
List the safe jobs they can do (no knives or hot stove unless I say so).

Step 5: Turn it into your own meal-planning bot

Retyping your family card every week gets old. Save it once:

Now every Sunday you just say “plan this week” and it already knows the mushroom rule.

Keep it safe (especially allergies)

  • Allergies are your call, not the bot’s. AI can make mistakes. Always read ingredient labels yourself, and never rely on an AI plan alone for a serious allergy.
  • Medical diets: for diabetes, kidney disease, pregnancy or any doctor-prescribed diet, use the plan as ideas only and check with your doctor or a registered dietitian.
  • Food safety: if a cooking time or temperature looks off, check a trusted source. Our safety guide covers what to double-check.

Quick FAQ

Can ChatGPT make a meal plan and grocery list?

Yes. Describe who you're feeding, likes, dislikes, allergies and cooking time, ask for 5 dinners, then ask for one combined grocery list grouped by store section.

What's the best prompt for AI meal planning?

Start with a household 'family card' (who's eating, loves, won't eat, allergies, time, gear, budget) and end with 'Ask me up to 3 questions if anything important is missing.' Then ask for dinners that reuse ingredients.

Is it safe to use AI meal plans with food allergies?

Use them as ideas only. AI can make mistakes, so always read labels yourself and don't rely on an AI plan alone for a serious allergy or medical diet.

Does this work in Claude or Grok Bot?

Yes. The prompts are plain language. Save your family card in a Claude Project, ChatGPT Custom Instructions or a custom GPT so you don't retype it.
