Quick answer: Start with one small, boring job. Give your Bot short, plain-English standing instructions for that job only, tell it how to sound, and tell it to ask you before it sends, posts, deletes or buys anything. Then try one of the 5 recipes below and improve it for a week.

First, what is Grok Bot (in plain English)?

According to xAI’s official docs, Grok Bot gives you Bots: AI helpers with names, jobs and memory that stick around. You work with a Bot by messaging it (typing, dictating or voice). Each Bot works on a persistent cloud computer with a browser and files, so it can do multi-step work in real apps and websites, not just write chat replies. It checks back with you when something needs your approval.

💬 You talk, it works

No coding. You describe a job like you would to a helpful new coworker.

🧠 It remembers

A Bot keeps its context, so tomorrow you come back to the same helper, not a blank chat.

⏰ It can run on a schedule

xAI calls these Routines: a standing job that runs on a schedule or when something happens, like a morning briefing.

Where it runs: the official docs list desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux and mobile apps for iPhone/iPad and Android. Who can use it: on the new X Subscription, Grok Bot is included on Premium ($30/mo), Super and Ultra, but not on Plus ($8/mo) or Free. So if you pay for X and don’t see Grok Bot, check which plan you’re on. Older Cursor paid plans and Cursor Teams still include it, and you can link an individual SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy or X Premium+ subscription. Plans change, so check the official plans page and x.ai/pricing before you pay for anything.

Honest note: menus and buttons change often, so this guide doesn’t give click-by-click paths. Everything below is what to say to your Bot, which works no matter where the buttons move.

Step 1: Pick ONE job (seriously, just one)

The #1 beginner mistake is asking a brand-new Bot to “run my life.” Pick one job that is:

  • Small: takes you 10–30 minutes today.
  • Repeated: happens daily or weekly.
  • Low-risk: if the Bot gets it slightly wrong, nothing bad happens.

Great first jobs: plan my morning, polish my emails, research products before I buy, answer shop FAQs from a doc I wrote, give homework hints. (Those are the 5 recipes below.)

Step 2: Write plain standing instructions

Standing instructions are the rules your Bot follows every time. Keep them short. Use this fill-in-the-blank template:

Your name is [BOT NAME]. Your one job: [THE JOB].
Every time: [WHAT A GOOD RESULT LOOKS LIKE, e.g. "3 bullets, under 120 words"].
Use only: [SOURCES, e.g. "my calendar and the FAQ doc I gave you"].
If something important is missing, ask me ONE question first.
Never: invent prices, facts or stats; share my private info.
Always ask me before you send, post, delete, buy or book anything.

Paste it as your first message to the Bot and ask it to remember these as its standing rules. Then test it with one real task.

Step 3: “It feels robotic.” How to make it friendlier

A common complaint on X is that bots feel transactional. The fix: put the personality in the standing instructions, not in each chat.

Talk like a warm, upbeat coworker. Short sentences, plain English, contractions.
Start with the answer, then one helpful extra. No corporate jargon.
Use my first name now and then. A little humor is welcome; sarcasm is not.
When you finish a task, tell me in one line what you did and what's next.
Fun test: ask “Explain what you’ll do for me today like you’re a cheerful sports announcer.” If you like the energy, ask it to keep a toned-down version of that voice.

Step 4: Require approval before it sends or buys

Grok Bot can work in real apps, which is the magic and the risk. xAI’s docs describe Bots coming back to you when something needs approval, and drafts you approve before they’re sent. Make your own rule crystal clear too:

Never send emails or messages, post publicly, delete files, buy, check out,
book, or change account settings without my explicit "yes" for that exact action.
Show me the draft or the cart first.

Also good to know (from the official docs): all your Bots share one cloud computer, including its files, browser sessions and logins. So only log it into accounts you’re comfortable every Bot using. More in our AI safety guide.

5 starter recipes (copy, paste, tweak)

☀️ 1. Morning plan

Your job: my morning plan. Each weekday morning, look at today's calendar and my to-do list
(or ask me to paste them). Give me: my top 3 priorities, a realistic time plan, and one thing
I can skip. Under 150 words, upbeat. Don't accept or decline any invites for me.

Bonus: once you like the results, ask your Bot to turn this into a daily Routine.

✉️ 2. Email polish

Your job: polish emails I give you. Keep my meaning and every fact exactly.
Give two versions: "warm" and "brief". Never add promises, dates or prices I didn't write.
Never send anything. I'll copy it or tell you "send this one" myself.

🛒 3. Amazon research helper (never buys alone)

Your job: shopping research. When I name a product, find 3 good options on Amazon.
For each: name, current listed price, rating, and the top pro and con from reviews.
Show prices exactly as listed with the date checked. Never guess a price.
You are NOT allowed to add to cart, buy, or check out. Research only. I'll buy it myself.

Why research-only? Prices and sellers change, and a wrong purchase is annoying to undo. Let the Bot do the boring comparing; you click Buy.

🏪 4. Shop FAQ helper

Your job: answer customer questions for [BUSINESS NAME] using ONLY the FAQ doc I gave you.
If the answer isn't in the doc, say: "Great question! Let me check with the owner."
and tell me the question. Never invent prices, hours or policies.
Draft replies for my approval before anything goes to a customer.

📚 5. Homework hints (teaches, doesn't cheat)

Your job: homework helper for my [AGE]-year-old. Never give the final answer first.
Ask what they've tried, then give one hint at a time. Explain simply and cheer progress.
If they ask you to just write the essay, help them outline it instead.

Your first week plan

  1. Day 1: pick one recipe, paste it, test 3 real tasks.
  2. Days 2–4: every time an answer misses, add one rule to its instructions.
  3. Day 5: add the friendlier-tone block.
  4. Day 7: if it’s saving you time, add a second job or make it a Routine.

Quick FAQ

Where do I start with Grok Bot?

Pick one small, repeated, low-risk job (like a morning plan or email polishing), give your Bot short plain-English standing instructions for that job, and tell it to ask before it sends or buys anything.

Do I need to know how to code to use Grok Bot?

No. You work with a Bot by messaging it in plain language: typing, dictating or voice.

How do I make my Grok Bot friendlier?

Put the personality in its standing instructions: for example, talk like a warm coworker, short sentences, answer first, ask one clarifying question when something important is missing.

Can Grok Bot buy things on Amazon for me?

Bots can work in websites, but for beginners we recommend a research-only shopping helper: it compares options and listed prices, and you place the order yourself. Tell it never to add to cart or check out without your explicit yes.

What do I need to get Grok Bot?

On the X Subscription, Grok Bot is included on Premium ($30/mo), Super and Ultra, not on Plus or Free. Older paid Cursor plans and Cursor Teams also include it, and you can link a SuperGrok or X Premium+ subscription. Check cursor.com/help/grok-bot/plans for current plans.

Is it safe to connect my accounts?

Connect only what the job needs, and require approval before sending, buying or deleting. All your Bots share one cloud computer, including its logins, so treat anything you log into there as available to every Bot.

Can Grok Bot work in Slack?

Yes. Connect the Slack app under Connect apps so it can draft/post as your Slack user, or (on a Cursor team) share a Bot and use Bring to your team’s Slack. A Slack trigger on a routine is separate and should stay narrow. Guide: studybuddyengineer.ai/guides/grok-bot-slack-for-beginners/.
