Join Bot ClubWhy an AI study buddy actually helps
The best way to remember something is to test yourself on it, not to reread it. An AI assistant is a tireless quiz partner: it can turn messy notes into flashcards, ask you questions, tell you what you missed, and explain it a different way when the first way doesn’t click. It works for school, a driver’s test, a work certification, or learning something just for fun.
Step 1: Turn on ChatGPT study mode (optional but great)
Study mode makes ChatGPT act more like a tutor: it asks you questions, gives hints and checks your understanding instead of just giving the answer. According to OpenAI’s help page:
- On the web: in a regular chat, type
@studyor click + and search “study,” then pick Study. You can also go straight tochatgpt.com/studymode. - On your phone: tap + to open tools and pick (or search for) Study.
- Heads up: it isn’t available in Temporary Chats, custom GPTs or Projects, so use a regular chat. Menus change between app versions, so if you can’t find it, check the official help page linked below.
No study mode in your app? No problem. Paste the “tutor card” in Step 2 and you get much of the same behavior in any assistant.
Step 2: Give it your “tutor card”
Be my patient study buddy. - I'm studying: [SUBJECT / TEST, e.g. 8th grade biology, cells chapter] - My level: [e.g. total beginner / I know the basics / test is Friday] - How I like to learn: [e.g. short explanations, real-life examples] Rules: don't just give me answers. Ask me one question at a time, wait for my reply, tell me if I'm right, and explain gently if I'm not. If you're not sure about a fact, say so instead of guessing.
That last line matters: it gives the assistant permission to say “I’m not sure,” which beats a confident wrong answer.
Step 3: Turn your notes into flashcards
Here are my notes: [PASTE NOTES, or upload a photo of them]. Make 15 flashcards as a table: Question | Answer. Keep answers short. Only use facts that are in my notes, and list anything that looked unclear or possibly wrong at the end.
Step 4: The practice quiz (the magic part)
Quiz me on these flashcards. One question at a time. Mix it up: multiple choice, fill in the blank, and "explain it in your own words." Keep score. At the end, tell me my 3 weakest topics and quiz me on just those again.
Getting one wrong is the point. That’s the part your brain remembers.
Step 5: A study plan that fits real life
My test is on [DATE]. I can study [e.g. 20 minutes on weeknights, 1 hour Saturday]. The topics are: [LIST]. Make a day-by-day plan that reviews older topics again as I go, puts my weakest topics first, and ends with a full practice quiz the day before. Keep each day's task to 1-2 lines.
Want it to show up on its own? Ask ChatGPT to turn your plan into a scheduled task (“every weekday at 7 p.m., quiz me on one topic until my exam”). Our scheduled tasks guide shows how, with free-plan limits.
5 bonus prompts that make it fun
🧒 “Explain it like I’m 10”
Explain [TOPIC] like I'm 10, using an example from everyday life. Then ask me one question to check I got it.
🔁 “Try a different way”
That explanation didn't click. Explain it again a totally different way: a story, an analogy, or a quick drawing described in words.
✍️ “Grade my answer, don’t write it”
Here's my answer to a practice question: [PASTE]. Don't rewrite it. Tell me what's strong, what's missing, and one hint to improve it.
🎤 “Teach-back”
I'm going to explain [TOPIC] to you as if you're my student. Point out anything I get wrong or leave out.
👪 “Parent helper”
My kid is in [GRADE] and stuck on [TOPIC]. Explain it to me simply so I can help, and give me 3 questions I can ask them at the table. Don't give me answers to their actual homework.
Step 6: Save it as your own study bot
Retyping the tutor card every time gets old. Save it once:
- ChatGPT: put the tutor card in Custom Instructions, or build a custom GPT called “Study Buddy” (remember: study mode itself works in regular chats, not GPTs).
- Claude: make a Project for each class, paste the tutor card into its instructions, and add your notes as project files.
- Grok Bot: see Grok Bot for beginners, then give it the tutor card and ask it to quiz you before each test.
Keep it honest (and accurate)
- Follow your school’s rules. Many schools and teachers have AI policies. Use your study buddy to understand and practice, not to write assignments you’re supposed to do yourself.
- AI can be wrong. Check important facts, dates and formulas against your textbook, class notes or teacher.
- Keep personal info out. No passwords, student ID numbers or other private details. Our safety guide covers what to keep private.
