Join Bot ClubWhy talk instead of type?
Typing is the slowest part of using AI, especially on a phone. With Voice you just talk, and ChatGPT talks back. It’s great for practicing a tricky phone call, learning travel phrases, thinking out loud on a walk, or helping someone who finds small keyboards frustrating. OpenAI’s help page says Voice works inside a chat, so you can listen while following the answer as text, type when you can’t speak, and scroll back without starting over.
Voice vs. Dictation: which one do you want?
ChatGPT has two different “talk” buttons, and beginners mix them up all the time:
| Voice | Dictation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | A live, back-and-forth spoken conversation. ChatGPT answers out loud. | Records what you say and turns it into text you can edit, then you send it. |
| Best for | Practicing, brainstorming, quick questions, hands-busy moments | Long, careful prompts you want to check before sending |
| Button | The Voice icon in the message bar | The microphone icon |
| What you get after | A transcript added to the chat (OpenAI notes it isn’t word-for-word) | Your own words as an editable message |
Step 1: Start your first voice chat (1 minute)
📱 On iPhone or Android
- Open the ChatGPT app and select the Voice icon in the message bar.
- If asked, allow ChatGPT to use your microphone.
- The first time, choose a voice you like.
- Start talking. Select the microphone control to mute or unmute yourself, and the exit control to end the call.
💻 On a computer
- Go to ChatGPT.com and select the Voice icon in the prompt window.
- Let your browser use the microphone when it asks.
- Start talking. Same mute and exit controls.
Your first thing to say, if your mind goes blank: “Hi! I’m new to this. Ask me three quick questions about my day and then give me one useful tip for it.”

Step 2: Pick a voice and a language
Open Settings → Voice, then Voice, to choose from (per OpenAI, checked Oct 22, 2026):
- Arbor (easygoing), Breeze (animated), Cove (composed and direct), Ember (confident), Juniper (upbeat), Maple (cheerful), Sol (relaxed), Spruce (calm) and Vale (bright and inquisitive).
- Some regions and languages get extra voices, and the list you see can vary by account.
If it keeps hearing the wrong language, go to Settings → Voice → Language and pick the one you speak most. You can also just ask mid-chat: “Let’s switch to Spanish.”
Want it slower, shorter or friendlier? Say so out loud: “Speak a little slower,” “Keep answers to two sentences.” OpenAI notes there’s no exact playback-speed dial yet, and ChatGPT’s preset personalities don’t apply to the newest voice option, so asking is the way.
Live, Advanced or Standard? (the 3 voice options)
You may see these under Settings → Voice. Which ones you get depends on your plan, region, app version and settings.
| Option | What it’s like | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Live | The most natural one. It can listen and speak at the same time, so you can interrupt it. | Can use web search and memory, and you can type or add an image in the same chat. No video or screen sharing. |
| Advanced | The previous real-time voice. | Use it when you want to show it something with your camera or share your screen (iOS and Android, eligible subscribers). |
| Standard | Turn-by-turn: it transcribes what you said, then answers. | Audio is deleted once it’s transcribed. |
How much can I talk? (plan limits)
OpenAI measures Live voice in Chat over a rolling 24 hours and tells you when you hit the limit. From OpenAI’s help page, checked Oct 22, 2026:
| Plan | Live voice per rolling 24 hours |
|---|---|
| Free | Limited access (OpenAI says limits may change) |
| Go | 3 hours |
| Plus | 3 hours |
| Pro ($100/month) | 15 hours |
| Pro ($200/month) | Unlimited (subject to abuse guardrails) |
Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces have their own allowances. If you run out, you can keep going by typing in the same chat.
Step 3: 4 fun things to try first
Copy one of these, start Voice, and say it (or paste it as a text message first, then switch to Voice). Fill in the [brackets] out loud.
1. 📞 Rehearse a phone call you’ve been dreading
Let's role-play. You're [the customer service rep at my internet company / my landlord / a doctor's receptionist]. I need to [get a late fee removed / ask for a repair / move an appointment]. Be realistic but fair, and push back once. After the call, tell me one thing I did well and one sentence I should say differently.
2. ✈️ Learn 5 phrases for a trip
Be my patient [Spanish / French / Japanese] coach. Teach me 5 phrases for [ordering food / asking for directions] in [CITY]. Say each one slowly, have me repeat it, and correct my pronunciation gently. Then quiz me on all 5 in a mini role-play.
3. 🧠 Think out loud, then get a to-do list
Wait until I ask you to respond. I'm going to ramble about [my week / a project / a decision] for a couple of minutes. When I say "OK, go", give me: my top 3 to-dos, one thing I can drop, and one question I should think about.
4. 🎯 Set ground rules before you talk
Before we talk: wait until I say [CUE WORD, e.g. full stop] before you answer. Keep answers to [2 sentences / 30 seconds]. You're a patient [ROLE, e.g. interview coach / travel tutor]. When I say "recap", summarize what we decided in 3 bullets.
That “Wait until I ask you to respond” line (script 3) comes straight from OpenAI’s own Voice tips — useful when you want to think out loud first. Script 4 goes further: set listen rules, a short-answer length, a role, and a “recap” cue up front. That beats treating Voice like a smart speaker (one-shot Q&A that jumps in mid-thought). Long pauses or background noise can still set it off, so headphones help. When you hang up, the transcript stays in the chat as text, ready to copy.

- “It keeps interrupting me.” OpenAI suggests headphones, a quieter spot or more volume. On iPhone, open Control Center during the call, tap Mic Mode and turn on Voice Isolation.
- “It answers before I’m done thinking.” Start with “Wait until I ask you to respond.” Long silences or background talk can still set it off.
- “It got confused with two of us talking.” Live voice is designed for one-on-one. It may answer when people are talking to each other.
- “It said the wrong day or time.” Voice uses your device’s time zone for words like “today”. Say the exact date or city if something seems off.
- “The call just ended.” You may have hit your limit, the maximum session length, or a very long conversation’s limit. Keep going by typing, or start Voice again.
- “The transcript isn’t what I said.” OpenAI says voice transcripts aren’t word-for-word. Use Dictation when exact wording matters.
- “I don’t see the Voice icon.” Update the app and check your plan, region and (for teen accounts) parental controls.
Handy extras: background, auto-start and the car
- Keep talking with the phone locked or while using other apps. Control it under Settings → Voice.
- Start with Voice: on supported app versions, turn this on in Settings → Voice and new chats open straight into Voice.
- Apple CarPlay: ChatGPT works in CarPlay on supported iPhones. OpenAI’s own advice: set it up before you drive and don’t fiddle with your phone while moving. Follow your local laws.
- One call at a time: you can only have one voice conversation going at once.
Is it private? What happens to your voice
- With Live and Advanced, OpenAI says your audio clips are stored with the chat transcript and kept for 30 days. Delete the chat and its clips are deleted within 30 days (with security and legal exceptions). Archiving a chat doesn’t delete anything.
- With Standard, audio is deleted once it’s transcribed.
- OpenAI doesn’t train on your voice clips unless you choose to share them. But if Improve the model for everyone is on, the text transcripts may be used for training. Check Settings → Data Controls, including Include your audio recordings.
- Never say passwords, card numbers or ID numbers out loud to any assistant. If a caller or message pressures you to read out codes, hang up.

Voice can interpret, too. Ask it to translate between two languages and OpenAI says it keeps going until you tell it to stop. Our guide to how to use AI as a translator has an “only translate” prompt that keeps it from chatting back.
