ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Should a Beginner Use?

A plain-English comparison for total beginners, students, small business owners and freelancers: what each free plan includes, which one fits your situation, a 5-minute test you can run in all three, privacy settings, and how to switch without losing your stuff.

Illustration for the guide: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Should a Beginner Use?
Quick answer: All three have free plans that are good enough to start, so you can’t really pick wrong. Pick ChatGPT if you want one do-it-all app: voice, picture-making, file uploads, Projects and study mode are all on the free plan (with limits). Pick Claude if you mostly write and read long documents and want your work organized in Projects (free accounts get up to 5), with memory, web search and voice also free. Pick Gemini if your life runs on Google (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Android): paid Google AI plans put Gemini inside Gmail and other Google apps and add extra Google storage. Still unsure? Run the 5-minute test below in all three and keep the one whose answer you liked best.

First, the honest truth: the “best AI” is the one you’ll actually use

ChatGPT (from OpenAI), Claude (from Anthropic) and Gemini (from Google) can all chat, explain things simply, help you write, read your files and answer out loud. For most beginners, the difference isn’t “smart vs. dumb.” It’s which app fits your day: the phone you carry, the email you use, and whether you mostly want quick answers, writing help or a study partner.

Phone-ok. All three have free phone apps and work in a web browser. You can try all three today without paying anything.

Here’s what each company’s own plans and help pages say today (October 20, 2026). Plans change often, so tap through to the official pages in the sources before you pay.

“Free” always comes with limits. When you hit one, the app tells you and you wait for it to reset or upgrade. OpenAI says Plus and Pro don’t show ads, and that ads don’t change ChatGPT’s answers.

Which one for your situation?

🎓 Students

Start with ChatGPT or Gemini. ChatGPT’s study mode is on the free plan, and Google’s plans page suggests uploading your notes or slides to Gemini to make a study guide or practice test. Claude works too: make one Claude Project per class and add your notes as files. Whichever you pick, ask for hints and quizzes instead of answers, and check your class rules on AI. Our study buddy guide has copy-paste prompts that work in all three.

🏪 Small business owners

Follow your email. If your business runs on Gmail and Google Docs, Gemini is the natural fit, because paid Google AI plans put Gemini right inside Gmail and other Google apps. If you live in Outlook, Word and Excel, look at Claude Pro (Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook) or ChatGPT (Word, Excel and PowerPoint extensions). Any of the three can hold your hours, prices and policies in a Project or Gem so it stops guessing. Start here: 10 small business prompts, emails that sound like you and a no-code FAQ bot.

💼 Freelancers and agencies

Pick the one with the best “one folder per client” setup for you. ChatGPT Projects, Claude Projects and Gemini Gems all keep a client’s instructions and files together. Just know Claude’s free plan caps you at 5 Projects, so if you juggle more clients than that, you’ll need Pro or another app. Never paste client passwords into any chat. More in AI for freelancers and agencies.

🌱 Older beginners (and the family helping them)

Pick the one that’s easiest to talk to. All three let you speak instead of type: ChatGPT voice, Claude voice mode and Gemini Live. Install one app, sign in, and try asking a question out loud. If it feels natural, you’ve found your assistant. Our gentle setup guide covers bigger text, voice and scam safety.

🚀 Job seekers

Any of the three will do the job. Paste a job posting and your resume and ask what’s missing, then practice the interview out loud with voice. The honesty rule matters more than the app: never let it invent experience you don’t have. See resume, cover letter and interview practice.

Already using an agent-style assistant like Grok Bot? The test below works there too. Our Grok Bot for beginners guide covers where to start.

The 5-minute test: run the same prompt in all three

Don’t trust anyone’s ranking (including ours). Your own real task is the best test. Open ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in three tabs (free plans are fine), paste the same prompt into each, and compare.

I'm new to AI and testing which assistant to use. Help me with
this real task: [YOUR TASK, for example "plan 5 cheap weeknight
dinners for 2 adults and a picky 8-year-old" or "reply to this
customer email: PASTE"].
First ask me up to 3 questions. Then give me your answer in under
200 words, in plain words. At the end, tell me one thing you're
not sure about.

Answer its questions, then send the same follow-up to all three:

Make it shorter and friendlier, and put it in a checklist.

Now score each one from 1 to 3:

QuestionChatGPTClaudeGemini
Did it ask smart questions?______
Was it easy to read?______
Did it sound like a person, not a robot?______
Was it honest about what it wasn’t sure of?______
Did the follow-up land?______

Bonus round: snap a photo of something confusing (a bill, a letter, a recipe card, with account numbers covered) and ask each one to “explain this in plain words.” Highest total wins. Answers vary from day to day, so if two are close, pick the app you like opening. New to writing prompts? Our 4-part prompt formula works in all three.

Privacy and safety basics (all three)

  • Never paste passwords, card numbers, account numbers or ID numbers. No AI needs them to help you.
  • ChatGPT: Settings → Data controls → turn off Improve the model for everyone, and OpenAI says your new chats won’t be used to train its models. A Temporary Chat stays out of your history, doesn’t create memories and isn’t used to train, though OpenAI may keep it up to 30 days for safety.
  • Claude: Settings → Privacy → Help improve our AI models controls whether your new chats are used for training. Anthropic says Incognito chats aren’t used to improve Claude even when that setting is on (chats flagged for safety review are the exception).
  • Gemini: for adults, Keep Activity is on by default, and Google says it uses that activity to improve its services, including training AI, with help from human reviewers. Turn it off in Settings & help → Activity; Google says future chats are then kept up to 72 hours and aren’t used for training unless you send feedback. Turning it off also switches off some Connected Apps. A Temporary chat stays out of your activity and recent chats.
  • Thumbs up/down shares the whole chat. OpenAI says rating a response can let that entire conversation be used for training even after you opt out, and Anthropic says it stores the whole rated conversation for up to 5 years.
  • Double-check anything important (money, health, legal, prices). All three can sound sure and still be wrong.

How to switch without losing your stuff

Switching is easier than it used to be. Here’s the order that keeps everything safe:

  1. Download your old chats first. ChatGPT: Settings → Data controls → Export data → Export (OpenAI says it can take up to 7 days, and the download link expires 24 hours after it arrives). Claude: Settings → Privacy → Export data, on the web or desktop app (not the phone app); the emailed link also expires after 24 hours.
  2. Moving to Claude? Go to Settings → Memory → Start import. Claude gives you a prompt to paste into your old assistant; you paste the answer back and select Add to memory. Anthropic says this works on free plans too (web and desktop) and is still experimental, so check what it learned afterward.
  3. Moving to Gemini? In Settings & help → Import memory to Gemini, you can paste in your memories, or upload your ChatGPT or Claude export ZIP (up to 5 GB, up to 5 files a day) to bring your chat history over. Google says you need a personal account, must be 18+, and it isn’t available in the EEA, UK or Switzerland yet. Text comes over; pictures and files you made don’t.
  4. Moving to ChatGPT? Copy your “about me” notes into Custom Instructions and your job-specific instructions into a Project. You can also ask your old assistant: “List everything you remember about me and how I like answers, in one block I can copy.”
  5. Re-make your saved helpers. Don’t expect Projects, custom GPTs or Gems to move over (Google says project files can’t be imported). Copy each one’s instructions into a note and re-upload its files in the new app.
  6. Cancel last. Anthropic says canceling Claude Pro doesn’t delete your chats; your account moves to the free plan. OpenAI notes an export can’t bring back chats you already deleted.

Quick FAQ

Which AI is best for a total beginner: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

All three have free plans that are fine for beginners. ChatGPT is a do-it-all app with voice, pictures, uploads, Projects and study mode on its free plan, Claude suits people who mostly write and work with long documents in Projects, and Gemini fits people who already use Gmail, Google Docs and Android. The best test is to paste the same real task into all three and keep the one you liked best.

Are ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini free?

Yes, all three have free plans with usage limits. Paid plans add more usage and features. Claude Pro is $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly; check chatgpt.com/pricing and gemini.google/subscriptions for current ChatGPT and Google AI prices in your country.

Which AI is best for a small business?

Follow your email and documents. Gmail and Google Docs users get the most from Gemini on a paid Google AI plan, which puts Gemini inside Gmail and other Google apps. Microsoft 365 users can look at Claude Pro or ChatGPT's Word and Excel extensions. Any of the three can save your hours, prices and policies in a Project or Gem.

Which one is the most private?

Each has controls. In ChatGPT turn off Improve the model for everyone or use Temporary Chat. In Claude turn off Help improve our AI models or use Incognito chats. In Gemini turn off Keep Activity or use a Temporary chat. Never paste passwords, card or account numbers into any of them.

Can I use more than one AI assistant?

Yes. All three have free plans, so you can keep one as your main assistant and use another for a second opinion on important answers.

How do I switch from ChatGPT to Claude or Gemini without losing my stuff?

Export your ChatGPT data first (Settings, Data controls, Export data). Claude can import your memories in Settings, Memory, Start import. Gemini can import memories and, where available, your exported chat history in Settings and help, Import memory to Gemini. Re-make Projects, custom GPTs and Gems by copying their instructions.
